See Yourself What do you look like? Do you understand?
The concept of relationships and its nuances have taken its grip on me within my art. Following up on an unconscious connection between my older works, I confront questions within it. How do people relate to one another? How do people relate to space? How do they react to limitations on that space? What is the difference between observing and participating in a relationship? How do these create perceptions of people as individuals and groups? Inspired by Tania Bruguera and Amalia Pica, I began an exploration using public communal painting space, jumping from that to explore abstract relationships between myself, others, space, and feelings. I’ve developed a library of communal works that I use to create representations of these relationships. Inspired by Mark Bradford’s process-based works, the process became important to these pieces, like paralleling the limitations of the communal pieces and curating/arranging parts from this library to create representations. These works are in direct conversation with a previous work, Paint Yourself, Acrylic on Paper, 2023.
